How the estimate works
Time saved, valued at your wage rate
- Minutes saved per worker each day = minutes spent looking × the share a shadow board saves.
- Hours saved per year = minutes saved ÷ 60 × workers across all shifts × working days.
- Annual labour saving = hours saved × average hourly wage.
- Total cost = boards × cost per board + installation + training time (hours × wage × workers).
- Payback = total cost ÷ annual saving, in months. The 5-year figure is five years of savings less the one-off cost.
This is an estimate to help frame a decision, not a guarantee. It assumes steady wage rates and no ongoing maintenance cost, and it counts only time saved searching. Fewer lost tools, faster audits and easier training are not included.
Where do the starting values come from?
They are example figures to get you started. The time teams spend looking for tools varies widely between sites, so the most useful number is your own. Watch one area for a shift, or ask supervisors how often work stops while someone finds a tool.
What should I enter for the cost per board?
Use your own estimate, or the figure from a quote. Every 5trak board is quoted individually because size, format and holders vary, so send your numbers with an enquiry and we will price the actual setup.
Does this work for cleaning stations as well as tools?
Yes. Enter the time spent finding cleaning equipment, PPE or change parts instead. The maths is the same: time saved, valued at the wage rate, against the one-off cost.
